If the DVD drive will not open or close, stay opened or closed, or makes grinding and popping noises, you may have to re-align the tray. A lot of times, just from normal use, a gear will skip or something will jump track if not all pieces are in the right place.
Learn how to remove the tray, align the internal parts to their starting position and re-insert the tray. Often, this can immediately make a drive working again. If you get disc read error, your drive may be dirty. Use a standard CD/DVD cleaner to clean the lens. Never blow canned air into the drive as this will only redistribute the dust inside and coat the optics you are trying to clean.
