The Need for Spare Taps

Taps are tools used for metal cutting which need to have very hard cutting edges. Substantial care is needed when using taps so as not to break them. Heat treatment and the type of steel used can make taps very brittle. Ensure that you always have enough spare taps by buying a set of combination drill tap bits.

Taps usually break by bending, not twisting. Small sizes are the ones that often get broken. And if you break a tap off in a hole, it may be very hard to remove the broken part. This is because taps are as hard as, or harder than, the drill bit so a broken tap can’t normally be drilled out.
